Der Angriff auf den gegnerischen König und letztlich dessen Mattsetzung ist das Ziel aller Ziele im Schachspiel. Allerdings ist ein solcher Angriff nur gerechtfertigt bzw. erfolgversprechend, wenn die positionellen Voraussetzungen hierfür vorliegen oder vorab geschaffen wurden. Sind die Kriterien für einen Königsangriff nur unzureichend erfüllt, wird die Attacke in der Regel fehlschlagen und der allzu optimistische Angreifer läuft Gefahr, selbst im Gegenangriff unterzugehen. Daher gilt es, zunächst Schwächen in der feindlichen Königsstellung hervorzurufen und diese schnellstmöglich zu nutzen, denn dem Verteidiger darf keine Zeit zur Konsolidierung eingeräumt werden.
Eine andere Methode besteht darin, gegnerische Figuren auf dem anderen Flügel zu binden, um unvermittelt zu einem Angriff auf den relativ ungeschützten König überzugehen. Die Vorbereitung und Durchführung des Angriffs kann verschiedene strategische und taktische Methoden erfordern - häufig werden auch Materialopfer gebracht, um angestrebte (Teil-) Ziele zu erreichen.
